For those who don’t know what it is, Tonight’s Shinjuku is a kind of informal/ice-breaker speech at the beginning of the meeting and one of us is supposed to talk about our own memory or what we researched about this town – Shinjuku. For today, let me talk about my memory about Shinjuku.
In my college days, I was a part of choir / chorus group. Our club used to hold annual concert once a year at Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Kaikan - one of the largest music hall in Tokyo at that time.

The capacity was more 2000 sheets. I was on the stage of this hall when I was a student from 1996 to 1999. Unfortunately the hall became old and has been closed in 2010. After that, the place was sold to private and the building itself was replaced by museum, apartment and office buildings.

Our club was coached and conducted by this person – Ryosuke Hatanaka. Hatanaka-sensei had been our conduct since 1960, which is before I was born actually. Sensei has been our coach for more than 50 years. I learned a lot from him.
In 2012, Sensei got 90 years old and decided to step out from our conductor.

We wanted to hold his last concert somewhere in Shinjuku but Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Kaikan was already closed. Then we had the concert here – Shinjuku Bunka Center - what a coincidence! – we have the first meeting today! Thank you, Watanabe-san, for nominating me!

Of course, I was already graduated from the college then but old students gathered then and had a performance together with current members. It is sad that, soon after the concert, Sensei has passed away. But the last performance we did at that time – we performed “grand march” from opera “Tanhauser” – was quite memorable moment.
Thank you, Toastmasters.
